There was gunfire. Gunfire and shouting, and Tony couldn't do anything about it. There was still a scalpel wedged between the reactor and his flesh, while another cut around the diameter. These guys didn't know what they were doing. They were going to kill him. If they removed the reactor for long enough, the shrapnel would travel to his heart and kill him. If they pulled the reactor out too fast, he'd go into cardiac arrest. He was more than likely going to die on this operating table and that wasn't the worst part.
The worst part was that Bucky would probably die, too. And if he was able to survive that, he'd be too weak to take on Hydra. He tried to thrash, but he still couldn't move. Whatever drugs were in his system had him paralyzed. He couldn't stop this from happening. The were going to kill him before the soldier could get here and then they'd both be dead-or worse, Bucky would live through it.
He wished he could have apologized to him. This entire time Tony had treated him like crap. He called him names, spat insults like venom, forced him to keep their bond a secret. There was so much he had done wrong and now he was going to get them both killed. He was selfish and stupid and this was all his fault. He'd never get to say he was sorry. He'd never get to admit that he-
The doors burst open. There was more shouting. The scalpel in his chest jerked and ripped something. If Tony could scream, he would. So instead, he screwed his eyes shut and just listened to the chaos surrounding him. More shouting, more gunshots. surgical tools dropping and scattering to the cold cement floor. The shuffle of feet running away.
And then silence.
Slowly he opened his eyes and bond's face came into view. Despite the situation, an immediate sense of relief washed over him. Sure, he was probably bleeding out, drugged, and trapped in a Hydra base, but that didn't matter. Bucky was alive. He was alive, and Tony wanted nothing more than to wrap his arms around him and never let go. It was selfish. There was part of him that wanted to tell his bond to get out of here. He'd only slow Bucky down and they'd both be trapped. But then there was the part that wanted him that was selfish and didn't want him to go.
His bond hissed something and Tony closed his eyes. He couldn't apologize. He couldn't even open his mouth if he tried. However could feel his eyes water. If Bucky were to ask him about it later, Tony would just blame the drugs in his system or the pain in his chest.
